The professional judgement of a Qualified Health Practitioner (for example, physiotherapist or occupational therapist) should be applied as necessary to decide on the level of physical need.
- a minimal physical difficulty related to fine or gross motor, spatial awareness or a minor diagnosed medical condition
- physical difficulties that require some specialist equipment but little adult support. Delayed standing or walking
- delay in eye hand coordination. Some difficulties caused by disability
- they have a short or long-term medical condition that requires monitoring and low-level support - this is managed and unlikely to be life-threatening
- medication may be required during the day
- attendance affected because of ill health or medical needs

The pupil has mild delay in fine or gross motor difficulties with minimal impact on daily functioning. The pupil’s needs can be met through high quality teaching.
Pupil presents with:
- fine or gross (or both) motor skills developing at a slower pace than peers. They may appear clumsy, poorly coordinated or lack strength
- untidy handwriting
- fidgety on a chair
- weaker PE skills, uncoordinated
- mild delay in development of skills, e.g. pencil skills, independence skills, use of cutlery
- mildly uncoordinated and with practice and/or appropriate intervention difficulties will be rectified
- the CYP has a mild mobility impairment that is easily managed with medication, stress relief or time out
- the pupil has a physical or medical condition which may influence tiredness and concentration levels.
- verbal communication is limited for physical reasons
- pupil may have fluctuating medical need which impacts on their self-esteem and confidence. For example, weight difficulties, incontinence
- pupil may need access to specific items of small equipment if medical conditions have resulted in minor motor impairments
- medical conditions may result in bullying and social isolation
