Supporting children and young people to successfully transition from special to mainstream school
At times a small number of children and young people require more specialist support and provision. However, the positive outcomes for children as a result of accessing inclusive education are well documented, leading to increased social, academic, employment and life opportunities. While it is crucial for children and young people to access specialist support as and when required, it is equally crucial for this to be part of a continuum of provision. Enabling their supported return to mainstream provision, resulting in improved and increased positive achievements and outcomes and enabling them to thrive academically, learn important life skills, and develop their independence in preparation for adulthood.
A parent or carer may decide their child is now ready to make the step to mainstream school because of the progress they have made and is ready for a wider educational experience. Or as a school or professional, you may have suggested a move following regular review of the child’s needs and outcomes achieved.
Lincolnshire’s transition protocol provides clear step by step support throughout the transition. From the initial planning stage to the successful inclusion at the mainstream school, the Pupil Reintegration Team oversees each step of the transition and provides access to additional transition funding for the mainstream school. The Pupil Reintegration Team works in tandem with parents or carers and their child, liaising with all involved to ensure a smooth, well-planned transition.
